Philippine Airlines pilots chose SkyBreathe® OnBoard for eco-flying!

Pioneering sustainable aviation: Philippine Airlines pilots embrace SkyBreathe® OnBoard for eco-friendly flying, a first in Asia

Manila, Philippines, May 14, 2024: Philippine Airlines (PAL) becomes the first Asian airline to adopt SkyBreathe® OnBoard to increase fuel savings live from the flight deck.

The country flag carrier has announced its partnership with OpenAirlines, the leading provider of fuel management solutions for airlines to integrate SkyBreathe® OnBoard into its operations. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the airline’s commitment to environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.

SkyBreathe® OnBoard is a user-friendly digital solution that uses advanced algorithms based on the world's largest fuel-efficiency database and real-time data to provide live assistance on fuel-saving initiatives in the cockpit.

The solution is part of the SkyBreathe® eco-flying platform, the leading fuel management software today used by 66 airlines worldwide to reduce CO2 emissions and increase efficiency and savings. SkyBreathe® OnBoard is designed to engage pilots and achieve additional fuel savings on the go.

For example, the integrated Direct Assistant enables pilots to receive timely notifications for in-flight shortcut opportunities for better decision-making. The recommendations consider real-time flight constraints based on the most granted direct routes by Air Traffic Control for fuel-saving and time-saving potential. This strategic implementation is forecasted to yield over 30% incremental improvement in fuel savings compared to normal operations, resulting in a quick return on investment.

By pioneering the integration of this groundbreaking solution, PAL strengthens its position as a forward-thinking leader in the Asia-Pacific region, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.

"Our dynamic partnership with OpenAirlines reinforces our commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration within the aviation ecosystem,” said Capt. Stanley K. Ng, PAL President & Chief Operating Officer.

"Since we started working with OpenAirlines in 2022 with the implementation of SkyBreathe® Analytics, we have achieved significant fuel savings. We have decided to bring this partnership further by adopting the latest innovation from the platform, engaging pilots in applying fuel-efficient initiatives at the right time during the flight. We are convinced that bringing SkyBreathe® OnBoard will further improve PAL’s operational performance.”

During the flight, pilots are busy performing many tasks, and it’s hard to know which, when, and how to apply fuel best practices. SkyBreathe® OnBoard results from years of dedicated R&D and collaboration with pilots to build an app that can push relevant and timely notifications on fuel-saving opportunities for good and quick decision-making without additional workload. We are honored that Philippine Airlines has become our first customer in Asia-Pacific to adopt SkyBreathe® OnBoard.” Says Alexandre Feray, CEO of OpenAirlines. "We trust Philippine Airlines' capacity to elevate fuel efficiency efforts and achieve remarkable savings."

As the aviation industry continues to devote attention to sustainability and efficiency, collaborations like the one between Philippine Airlines and OpenAirlines attest to the transformative potential of digital solutions in shaping a greener future for air transport.
