Zero Fuel Weight Error (ZFWE) is a quiet but costly driver of unnecessary fuel burn, especially for cargo airlines. To help mitigate this, UPS Airlines trialed an “adaptive” two-step fueling approach on one long-haul lane to test whether small, controlled adjustments to planned payload values could safely reduce the excess fuel uplift associated with ZFWE. The goal was simple: explore whether more precise, data‑informed fuel planning could curb excess burn without increasing operational risk.
Early results were compelling. Across nearly 40 flights, the adaptive approach consistently reduced ZFWE, delivered meaningful fuel and CO₂ savings, and generated zero fueling‑related delays. This performance suggests that even modest refinements to legacy fuel-planning practices can unlock significant efficiency gains, offering a scalable opportunity for future lanes.
