IndiGo's experience implementing SkyBreathe® with Ravi Bajaj
During OpenDay 2024 we had the privilege of sitting down with Ravi Bajaj, Director of Performance Engineering at IndiGo, to explore his insights on implementing a fuel efficiency software. During our discussion, Ravi shared his experience in leveraging cutting-edge strategies and tools to drive performance optimization.
How was your experience with the integration process and your interactions with the OpenAirlines team?
IndiGo is growing at a very fast pace. We started our interactions with OpenAirlines in somewhere around 2021 where we got into this agreement.
We initially tried to integrate some of the data sources which were already available, which includes ACARS, flight planning data, FDR data, load interim data and AOC data. All these data sources are currently integrated into the SkyBreathe® system, but it was, of course, one of the challenges.
These data platforms came from different sources, and OpenAirlines’ teams had the capabilities to introduce these systems very effectively into SkyBreathe®.
Once all these databases were integrated at one place, we did trials and validations of the data sets for almost six months, to ensure the data, which was coming from Indigo sources to SkyBreathe® was correct and validated.
Indigo is a big airline, we started the fuel saving and operational efficiency journey somewhere around 2010. We already had a lot of experience and data available to compare it with the SkyBreathe® onboarding systems when these data sets were integrated into the system and that really helped us out.
We faced some data valuation issues, data correctness issues, that were sorted out with the experience of OpenAirlines and our team members who were involved into this project.

How has being a part of the SkyBreathe® impacted your organization?
Being part of the SkyBreathe® Community really helped us to get into the big data, framework approach towards all the data sets which we have already in the system.
As I said earlier, Indigo embarked on the journey of fuel efficiency and operational efficiency, as early as 2010. However, until 2018 and 19, we were doing all these things with the traditional way: looking into the Excel Sheet excess database and in house solutions, which were prepared for it.
Joining the SkyBreathe® Community, helped us to get into the big data approach where the concept of machine learning and artificial intelligence are being introduced to support our decision making and strategy development.
The SkyBreathe® Community also helps us to interact with other airlines members to understand what sort of best practices they have been following, how they are interacting for operational efficiencies. What are the other areas of improvement and KPIs which we can set into our organization...
It also really helps us to identify problematic areas because now the data we get is real time data (as early as three days for a particular flight, which is being flown). We can look into the ACCAR's data, FDR data and other available sources, which we really want to look into and identify the areas of improvement.
